In late 2024, local artist G.A. Lawrence is said to have made the first known rendering of an animalope after spotting one near the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. The creature lingered at the roadside only a moment—just long enough to be remembered—then disappeared before she could blink.

What remained was the lure. Storytellers claim animalopes are drawn to lines of shiny objects left at the edge of the pavement: bottle caps, coins, bits of broken chrome. A photograph of that lure still survives. See the original photograph of the lure on Instagram.
